LEA FULL SIM ART SERIES (JUNE): DB Bailey's 'In a Tizzy'

.

The illustrious DB Bailey (David Denton) holds the reins for the June round of the LEA FULL SIM ART SERIES (here for full year schedule), bringing to us 'IN A TIZZY',  a dedication to my first Second Life hero (or heroine), she of the Chakryn Forest... Bettina Tizzy.

This FULL SIM installation is NOW OPEN (Through Midnight SLT 30th June)

LOCATION: HERE @ LEA 6
http://slurl.com/secondlife/LEA6/182/31/43

In DB's words:
Dedicated to Bettina Tizzy, who influenced so many in Second Life with the founding of NPIRL (Not Possible In Real Life). She has always believed strongly that this medium should be explored for its uniqueness in creating a  new reality, rather than using it to re-create our known reality. The advent of mesh will make realism even more possible and tempting at the expense of fully exploring the full potential of this new technology. Her message is more valuable than ever. Thank you, Bettina, wherever you are.
Installation by David Denton
I read recently that science is now concluding that dreams have no meaning. It is thought they are random images produced by the brain that are completely disconnected and do not reveal anything about our inner being. What a relief.
I have had a dream recurring for most of my life of being in a room with no windows and no doors. I can walk through any wall and find myself in another room which is completely different and disconnected from the first. Any direction I walk I enter yet another room. What a relief to now realize this dream is not indicative of some incipient neuroses!
This installation explores the concept of sequential rooms totally unrelated to each other. Each room is an environment with a particular personality. When I begin work on the next room I do not start with the vision of what this room might be like. I simply try as many different variations and combinations of forms, textures and color until I find something that feels right. It seems to have a life of its own and I am more the facilitator then the creator. There are certain consistencies in my installations such as the use of the Audi car bumper and Greek temples. They mean nothing, only that I'm too lazy to invent new toys.
I seem to have more to say about what it is not, than what it is. But that is important, for it frees the viewer to have his or her own unique experience. I don't even like putting names on installations, as it implies what one is supposed to see rather than what one might see. There's nothing here that requires the analytical part of the brain, so turn it off. It was created intuitively and should be experienced in a similar manner. Form, texture and color combinations can produce certain reactions and represent the entirety of the experience.

MachinimUWA V: Bleu Oleander's 'Something's Buggin Me'

Bleu Oleander's "Somethin's Buggin' Me', for MachinimUWA V: Seek Wisdom, is a tribute to master scripter Oberon Onmura's 'Awareness Array'. In Bleu's words:

"My video challenges viewers to contemplate what constitutes wisdom for them. Wisdom ... the cultural narratives we absorb; the narratives we tell ourselves. We seek wisdom in the words and ideas of others, in the experience of everyday life, in art, music, dance and theater.

I've used references to Greek oracles, institutes of higher learning and contemporary art to suggest that we find wisdom in a variety of places. Oberon Onmura's beautiful piece "Awareness Array" is the perfect metaphor for this reflection on wisdom. Wisdom starts with awareness, coming to us from many sources. We incorporate that wisdom into our own self wisdom ... wisdom for how a life can be lived to enhance human flourishing."

MachinimUWA V: Benicia Beck's 'High Volume'

Benicia Beck's 'High Volume' will touch many of us, for whom the content of this machinima, is very close to home.

In her words:
"Seeking wisdom --

Many of us yearn to know the answers to lofty philosophical questions. We embark on our quest early, even as toddlers -- and sometimes, eventually, we gain enough understanding to feel a bit wise. Not everyone has the luxury of that search. For them there are few opportunities and even less joy.

For some, the biggest mission of each day is to combat the feeling that there is no way out, nowhere to turn, no one to help. Trapped in a world where possibilities seem beyond reach, trying to merely survive, there is little energy left for contemplation.

Sometimes there is only a bright pink jacket as a reminder that somewhere out there there is a world where seeking enlightenment is a viable alternative to simply making it through the day. Sometimes a bridge is formed to that world; other times despair holds the role as victor.

Many of us have been touched by the suicide of a friend or loved one. Suicide deaths have risen ten percent in the last decade. Know the signs. Help when you can.

 Uploaded on Memorial Day 2012"

UWA's Treasure Chest: Winthrop Hall Comes to Life

Many of UWA's "100 treasures" designated by the Centenary celebration committee, are reproduced in beautiful detail on the UWA virtual campus in Second Life. In fact, UWA's presence in Second Life is itself listed as one of the treasures. As many would be aware, these form the core of the L$725,000 MachinimUWA V challenge with the theme "Seek Wisdom."

Winthrop Clock Tower in Second Life
In perusing the objects in the 100 treasures book, one thing that struck me was the number of them that are in, near, or part of the iconic Winthrop Hall (including, of course, the building itself as a whole). The beautiful and meticulous rendition of the façade in Second Life with its adjoining reflecting pool is known to anyone who has spent time here or has worked in the nearby sandbox. You can see the busts of Socrates and Diotima, the Rose Window, the clock tower, the Mosaic Marble Floor in the entryway and wrought iron rail, even the subtle winged lion frieze below the eaves of the building.

Among the treasures inside Winthrop are the interior ceiling beams with aboriginal-inspired decoration, the use of the venue for the annual student exams, and the rose window once again, but illuminated by the sun and framed by the majestic McGillvray pipe organ that dominates the proscenium.

In March we held an Artists' Choice challenge on the theme "music." On a lark I thought it would be fun to install the world's largest pipe organ. I built a pipe rezzer that arranged a set of pipes in more-or-less correct proportion (assuming equal temperament using the 12th root of 2 as a scale parameter), but at an utterly impractical scale. Nonetheless it was an appropriately musical backdrop for the exhibition that month.

Initial Pipe Organ (Image - Virtual)
What I didn't realize until later when Jay Jay Zifanwe (Jegathesan) pointed it out, was that my organ bore an uncanny resemblance to the one in Winthrop Hall at UWA (including the clarion horns), another of the 100 treasures. Having done what I thought was the hard part by building the pipe rezzer, I figured why not go ahead and recreate the Winthrop organ? And of course I couldn’t just build the organ. I had to recreate the entire interior of Winthrop Hall. This project has absorbed much of my spare time in the last month or two and it is now yet another treasure of UWA recreated in SL. Machinimatographers and any other curious people may now enter Winthrop from the foyer. There is a teleport device there. The interior would not fit comfortably within the existing façade, so I had to put it on a platform above. But I think you’ll get a pretty realistic feeling of what it is like in that space and it is appropriate for the MachinimUWA V challenge.

I want to thank Jay Jay for taking many pictures of the interior details and long shots. I used his photos for the stone wall textures and doors, as well as the ceiling decorations, the wall medallions, the stained glass windows, and the large wall hanging in the back of the hall above the choir loft. I have detailed some of the challenges in creating this space on my own blog.

FreeWee Ling

Editor's Note:
FreeWee Ling, the UWA Curator of Virtual Arts  has done a remarkable job in bringing this space to life. I graduated in Winthrop Hall, as did many thousands throughout UWA's 100 year history. This brings full circle the efforts to recreate Winthrop Hall in Second life. The facade, Atrium with Mosaic Marble Floor, Rose Window & Reflecting Pond were created by Dr Chris Thorne, David Gaze, Wong Tzu Yen & quadrapop Lane  in 2009, and in May 2012, thanks to FreeWee Ling, the full creation is realized!

MachinimUWA V: jjccc Coronet's 'UWA Summer Exhibition'

jjccc Coronet brings 'UWA Summer Exhibition' to machinimUWA V, an amazing sampling of the artworks on display at the UWA SIMS as seen through the eyes of a curious feline. At a glance, this seems to include works by between 50-100 artists with some of the artwork going back to 2009, and some just sent in days ago. The works span the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge, The UWA 3D Open Art Challenge, The Artists Choice Challenge and the ongoing UWA Centenary 3D Art Challenge. It also features the inside of the Winthrop Clock Tower building, which is painstakingly being put together by FreeWee Ling.

In describing this machinima, jjccc says, 'Cat seeks wisdom... Cat finds wisdom and a whole lot more... like bureaucracy and trips into unknown worlds of imagination and ideas but at the end of the day the cat is just a cat and the art which the cat Loves fell asleep into a dream of possibilities'
