FreeWee Ling wins $18,000 Endeavour Executive Fellowship to Visit Perth, UWA

FreeWee Ling has had many remarkable feathers in her cap across the 4 years she has been curator of virtual arts with UWA's 3D Virtual presence. Pioneering the UWA Studies in Virtual Arts Series, curating the various grand art challenges, conceptualising and running the Artists Choice series, the Tim Maley Butterfly Garden in collaboration with Disability in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts WA (DADAA), and many more.

In a fitting acknowledgement to her incredible contributions to global and trans-pacific art, FreeWee has this week received a letter from the Australian Minister of Education, Christopher Pyne,  informing her of her selection as the recipient of the 2015  Endeavour Executive Fellowship worth  approximately $18,000 which will allow her to travel the the University of Western Australia, in Perth for 4 months.

FreeWee had remodelled the inside of Winthrop Hall using a combination of building plans, videos and photos and built the Len Zuks UWA Centum created for UWA's centenary, and early next year for the first time, she will be able to appreciate these in person, and meet all the people she has been working with across the years through SL including Professor Ted Snell, Len Zuks, quadrapop Lane, Dusty Canning, Sharni Azalee and Jay Jay.

Freedom Project in 'Artist's Chronicle' Book Review & A Feature at 'The Other Film Festival'

The Nov/Dec issue of the West Australian Visual Art Journal, 'Artist's Chronicle', carries a review of the Freedom Project book that can  be found HERE.

The book, crafted and put together by UWA arts curator FreeWee Ling was the end of a nearly year long cycle which saw he Freedom Project take life. The UWA's 'The Freedom Project', call for artists, filmmakers and writers from across the globe with disabilities or chronic illnesses to share a creation which showed what freedom meant to them and were invited to share their own personal story of how virtual worlds assisted them in gaining that freedom.

The Freedom Project was also the trigger for Victorian Arts Access to invite UWA 3D virtual worlds founder, Jay Jay Jegathesan to speak at 'The Other Film Festival' in Melbourne this December.

The work of Xia Firethorn, 'My body is a cage', features in the Artist's Chronicle book review. It will be available online as well presently on the Artist's Chronicle website.

UWA SiVA - Past, Present, Future

FROM FREEWEE:
In 2012 I created the UWA 3D Artists' Choice Challenges, a series of eight monthly exhibitions on different themes, with winners chosen by the participating artists. Along with this series I began to assemble my documentation into exhibition catalogs for each show which became the online journal series, UWA Studies in Virtual Arts, an official publication of UWA. A few of these issues were selected to have very limited print runs, including the first Artists' Choice show, last year's UWA Centenary REFLECTIONS, and this year's amazing FREEDOM PROJECT. We were fortunate with this last edition to have gotten sufficient funding to provide a printed copy of the book to each participant.

On some of the early Artist's Choice editions I had started the work, but had gotten sidetracked with other priorities. I am happy to announce that the backlog of those issues has been completed and all 8 Artists' Choice exhibition catalogs are now online.

I have just begun photographing the current exhibition: TRANSCENDING BORDERS. For this book I plan to highlight the winners of the MachinimUWA VII competition as well as the 3D art show. This is one of the most exciting shows we have ever done and I'm looking forward to assembling the SiVA catalog for it.

Arrow Inglewood attempts to transcend the space-time continuum with 'Pas de Digital'. Elizabeth Spieler's 'Transcending Borders' gives us an insight into the wonders of the human mind. Alfonso Garavito Olivar shows us how virtual worlds help with language teaching in a global interconnected world with "La profesora de lengua castella". Alfonso's work epitomises the global nature of virtual world collaborations, with himself hailing from Colombia, now living in the USA, the poet, Beatriz Giovanna Ramirez is also from Colombia but living in Spain, the musician, David Postigo Rodriguez is from Spain, the voice over actress, GLOR14 is from Argentina and the SIM designer, Kai Separis is from Japan.
