Exploring LEA6 in July by Victoria Lenoirre

Step into a vast world of a dream....a dream of light and color....of grand architecture...a dream created by Lollito Larkham.

I'm back with another review of the LEA Full Sim installation at LEA6. I have the pleasure of reviewing Lollito Larkham's Souvenirs De Voyages: (Memories of Journeys of Marcel Chiffon, A Monumentalist Exhibition).

When you are here, remember to set your graphics to Ultra for the full experience. If you cannot, see if a friend will let you use their system. By the way, this is a great sim to make a machinima of. In Ultra, you see the lighting, the fantastic windlight setting, and you do feel disoriented. The scenes do seem random and not related in any way. The land seems so vast and spacious.

Once you arrive, you should see an Info banner/sign with destinations that you can teleport to. You just click to sit and then you will be sent to the place you chose. Click a short sign to the left for a notecard about Souvenirs De Voyages, written by Lollito Larkham.

Landing area

One of the destinations I teleported to was The Arch.

Edit: This is The Arch. You can see more images of the place at this flickr gallery: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lollito/7576301678/in/photostream.

The Arch

It is a tall, stone structure. The light on the structure is great. It is a subtle green. Notice how the light reflects on the water? That is such an awesome effect.

Throughout this Full Sim installation, Lollito has put light onto the structures. There is even one location called Light of Life.

As is my habit, I asked the artist some questions about his work.

Who is Marcel Chiffon?

Lollito: Marcel is a traveler of the dream, little in spite of him, and it is all its misfortune there, because he does not always know how to face his night-adventures.
He does not know it, but his house is situated on a hypnagogical knot and he can be sometimes snatched by the dreams of others or be clamped in his own ones. He can sometimes get lost in very distant parts of the dreamlands without knowing how to return, or as well to live a "dream life" and more to want to return!
It is it the adventures of Marcel Chiffon !
It makes of him a dreamlike explorer.
We could place Marcel Chiffon halfway between Julius Conrentin Acquefaques and Randolph Carter...
Of return of his night-adventures, he writes notes and sketch on what he lived and met.

Marcel is born recently and he's still a character under construction.

CF. Echapées Nocturnes de Marcel ChifonCF. What does Echapées mean?

Lollito:
Echapée has different meanings in french :
-Escapade, exit;
-Free and narrow space which lets see something (this house has a breakaway on the sea);
-Space between the walking(steps) of a staircase and the ceiling;
-Made outstrip a group in a race,

and, musically , an escape tone or "échappée" is a particular type of unaccented incomplete neighbor tone which is approached stepwise from a chord tone and resolved by a skip in the opposite direction back to the harmony.

Echapée was for me the best word to describe Marcel's travels beyond the dreamlands : I can say most of the meanings above can match my installation "Les échapées nocturnes". Dreams are like little escapades from the real world and the escape tone is a great image for this : Leaving the regular tone a short moment, to embelish (in a similar process to when you create something new by "accident"), and come back to it to resolve.

What happened to Marcel? He disappeared?

Lollito: Yes. It seems that he didn't find his way back and he's still stuck somewhere in dreamlands. In "Les echapées" it was terrible for him. He had to face extradimensional creatures, which were not significantly friendly... I heard he had been abducted by one of those creatures, but i'm sure he'll be back soon, Marcel allways get the last word (or dream)!
His last échapée was not fatal.
While waiting for his return, you can admire his sketches taken during his journeys through the lands of the dream, on LEA6.

The green guy looks interesting. What does he symbolize?

Lollito: If you're talking about the leave character, he symbolizes the creation process, in micro and macrocosmos.
He's the life that comes by the light power. Isn't life given by the light. That 's why i representated it as a leaf, taking life from the sun, and transforming from a seed into a figurative person.
This character is also a sculptor, and this  represents the creation process in the microcosmos.
I displayed it at the top of the "Lollito's Boson" structure.

I was just finishing this character creation when I heard scientists have just succeeded to discover the controversed Higgs Boson.
The Higgs boson is supposed to be the fundamental composant of the mateer. I saw a relation with the meaning of this character and decided to build my own Cern cyclotron and  associate this character with. I displayed him sculpting the fundamental cube/prim at the top!

And that dear art lovers and supported is my quick review of Lollito Larkham's Souvenirs De Voyages! Won't you please venture over to explore  it at LEA6?

Have fun and enjoy the art!

MachinimUWA V: Seek Wisdom

 poster credit: Eliza Wierwight

We are happy to announce the 5th Machinima Challenge put forth by the University of Western Australia (UWA). The theme is 'Seek Wisdom'. Sponsored by UWA, AviewTV, Philip Vought, Freemason Magic & The Tornado Gallery, the prize pool sits at L$785,000 (approx USD 3,400). We hope you are inspired by this to create many wondrous works as you have been through the years! (Please note the major rule & special prize guideline)

WHAT: MachinimUWA V : Seek Wisdom

WHEN: Entries Close at Midnight SLT 30th June 2012.  Winner will be announced in August 2012

THEME: The theme is 'SEEK WISDOM'. How you traverse the metaverse in this quest is totally up to you...the Machinimatographer. What is wisdom? What path do you take? Can it be attained? Is it an unending lifelong endeavour? Can it be found? Should one choose to seek only in the realm of the virtual or beyond? Is one doomed to fail? Is wisdom the embodiment of someone... something... somewhere... somewhen? Is this but another JOURNEY?

MAJOR RULE:
You machinima can be about whatever you choose, but there is one rule all entries must follow. The only requirement is that at least ONE of the 100 Treasures from UWA must form part of your story. These are actual treasures, however at least 17 of them exist on UWA land in Second Life. You may choose to include as many of the treasures as you like so long as there is at least ONE. Apart from this, feel free to film anything, anywhere. You may use props at the location, or maybe want to change the footage later during the post process, this is up to you... as long as the treasure or treasures you choose to be part of your Machinima can be recognized and form part of your storyline.

‘Seek Wisdom’ is the university's motto and can be found on UWA’s coat of arms. It was selected as the theme for MachinimUWA V to honour the new way education is delivered at UWA, "New Courses 2012." The inclusion of one of treasures from the book 100 Treasures from UWA also celebrates the 2013 Centenary of the University of Western Australia. This book of which UWA Second Life is listed among the treasures, was the inspiration to enshrining at least some of these treasures in virtual space. You can see all 100 treasures online at http://www.treasures.uwa.edu.au/treasures/ and locations of the 17 that exist in virtual space are as linked below.

PRIZES: There is a prize pool of L$785,000 with a L$140,000 top prize, and 11 prizes in all. From the field of entries, a Special UWA Prize of L$100,000 will also be awarded to the Machinima that best captures the essence or spirit of 100 years of seeking wisdom at UWA. L$10,000 will be awarded to the best machinima poster

LENGTH: 4 mins 30 seconds is the strongly recommended length, but this is not a hard rule. The UWA Special Prize however can only go to a machinima that fits within the recommended length.

METHOD OF ENTRY: Load the Machinima anywhere, preferably youtube or vimeo, provide link to Jayjay Zifanwe & LaPiscean Liberty

We look forward to seeing what you find when you SEEK WISDOM.

Second Life Image by Germany's Harter Fall Makes UWA 2013 Friends of the Grounds Calendar

Photo of Winthrop Clock Tower seen from the Hackett Buildings (Image Credit: Bastian Gerlach/Harter Fall)
The UWA Friends of the Grounds group (RL) have just produced their 2013 Calendar. This is a special issue to celebrate the University's centenary, and images from past photographic competitions (one of which was held in 2011) including images from the UWA Archives have been used for it.

The 2011 competition led to 2 photos from Second Life, by Jay Jay Jegathesan/Zifanwe and Silene Christen of the Spanish Balears Islands making it into the 2012 calendar

The photographers were told at the time, that their submissions would be also considered for the 2013 calendar as well, as the photographic competition is held ever 2 years.

We are happy to announce that the photo above by Germany's Harter Fall (Bastian Gerlach) has been selected by the UWA Friends of the Grounds selection panel for inclusion in the special edition 2013 Centenary Calendar.

On hearing the news, Harter commented, "Thank you so much for including my photo in the 2013 UWA calendar, this is a great honour. I wish the UWA faculties, students and alumni happy centenary celebrations and good luck for the next 100 years... 'Gaudeamus igitur'."

A copy of this calendar will be part of the prize package for the winners for the current UWA Centenary 3D Art Challenge as well as MachinimUWA V: Seek Wisdom. This includes the winners of the Audience Participation Events

In Lollito's words (translated from French) :

First of all, thanks to the LEA to rely on my work and to allow me to experiment. Having a whole SIM is something totally new to me.

This installation consists of meshes and the SIM must be visited with the specially conceived sky setting.

It is about independent scenes rather than a narrative set. These scenes establish the memories of journeys of Marcel Chiffon, found in the forms of sketches on the pad left behind after his disappearance (CF. Echapées Nocturnes de Marcel Chifon).

The space is conceived, with the sky setting, to pass from a scene to the other one without real transition, which is intended to give the feeling of travel within a dream.

I wanted to create spaces with the least amount of  bounding as possible.

The sky setting allows for the isolation of scenes from one to the other and also to isolate the SIM from the the rest of the world.

It is conceived to work in complementarity with the light settings of Second Life.

The Graphic Ultra mode (with Lights  and shadows) are indispensable in order to have the desired rendering.
The use of the lights also requires that the constructions are viewed from a close distance.

I wanted to work on the monumental aspect to make something I don't usually make.Rather than to model and texture scenes in blender, which would have taken months, I preferred to work on the play of lights and  space in relation to sculptures and improbable architectural constructions.

This work gets closer to Land art and to Monumental art.

My first idea was to model and to texture the SIM in blender for mastery of the lighting at a SIM-wide scale, but it was not possible. I thus decided to use SL lights and terraforming.

The light  is a very important aspect. It is important to use the recommended sky setting, and to set your viewers to the 'ultra' graphics mode, and to approach each of the constructions to view the full rendered works.

Also, the intent was to blur the usual frameworks, by making it such that the visitor feels a little disorientated spatially: no drawn road, no guiding paths, an fully open SIM, where we can approach spaces and structures according to various angles, either by foot or flight.

The intention of the layout of the sim - without bounded spaces - and the ambiant light, is that the avatars pass in the background.

Be not surprised if you do not realize that your friends or other avatars are actually next to you. The constructions come to light according to your visit, and shall give you the feeling to move forward of musing in musing.

Thank you for your visit.

Lollito Larkham
